Veteran Business Owners: Use AI to Prep Your SBA Loan Package, Then Get a Human Review

If you’re a veteran running or starting a small business, a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan is often the first financing you’ll look at. The paperwork is the hard part: a business plan, cash flow projections, and a personal financial statement, all of which a lender will read closely.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can help you get organized and write cleaner drafts. It shouldn’t be the one deciding what goes in your loan package.

Know Which Loan You’re Preparing For

Two SBA programs come up most for small businesses:

  • Microloans go up to $50,000 and are made through SBA funding intermediaries. SBA says the average microloan is about $13,000.
  • 7(a) loans are SBA’s main loan program and go up to $5 million. SBA Express, a faster 7(a) option, tops out at $500,000.

You apply through a lender, not through SBA directly. SBA’s Lender Match tool connects you with participating lenders. If you’re a veteran or a veteran’s spouse, ask about SBA Express (loans up to $500,000). SBA charges no upfront guaranty fee on those loans for veteran-owned businesses. Regular 7(a) loans don’t have a veteran discount, so ask each lender which documents they want and what fees apply.

Where AI Actually Helps

Use the free version of ChatGPT or Claude for the writing, not the numbers:

  • Business plan sections. Paste in your notes and ask for one section at a time, like the company description or your marketing plan. Plain language beats buzzwords with a loan officer.
  • Explaining your numbers. Once you’ve built your projections in a spreadsheet, paste them in and ask for a plain-English summary of how you’ll repay the loan. Check every figure it repeats back.
  • A document checklist. Ask it to turn your lender’s requirements into a checklist with deadlines.

Don’t let AI generate your financial projections or fill out SBA Form 413, the personal financial statement SBA and lenders use to judge your ability to repay. For a 7(a) loan, each owner of 20% or more, plus any guarantor, fills one out (SBA Express lenders may use their own version). Those numbers have to come from your actual records, and you certify them under penalty of criminal prosecution.

Get a Human to Review It

Before you submit, get a second set of eyes. SBA’s resource partners include Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), SCORE, and Veterans Business Outreach Centers (VBOCs), which work specifically with veterans, service members, and military spouses. SCORE mentoring is free.

An experienced counselor will catch the gaps a chatbot misses, like a cash flow projection that doesn’t match your plan’s hiring timeline.

Federal Contracts Are a Separate Track

If you want to bid on government work, SBA’s Veteran Small Business Certification (VetCert) program certifies veteran-owned small businesses to compete for federal contracts, and certified service-disabled veteran-owned businesses can compete for set-aside and sole-source contracts. It’s a separate application from your loan. Don’t count contracts you haven’t won in your loan projections.

When This Isn’t Worth It

If you only need a few thousand dollars, ask a counselor whether an SBA microloan or another option fits better than a 7(a) loan.

For tax questions about your structure or deductions, skip the chatbot. Talk to a certified public accountant (CPA) or enrolled agent.

Your Next Step

Use SBA’s Lender Match tool to find two or three lenders and ask what they need. Then book a session with your nearest VBOC or SCORE mentor, and bring an AI-drafted company description as your starting point.
