Catching Fake Referrals Doesn’t Take a Predictive AI Tool

If you pay people for referrals, someone will eventually try to game it. The same person signs up twice with different emails. A friend “refers” themselves. A burst of sign-ups shows up that never buys anything.

You don’t need an expensive predictive tool to catch most of this. You need a few simple rules and the habit of checking before you pay out.

Start With Rules

Most referral fraud is boring and easy to spot:

  • The same email, phone number, or payment card on more than one account
  • The referrer and the “new” customer sharing a name or address
  • Referred customers who never buy, or who refund right away

A free Google Sheet catches the first two. Export your referrals once a week and check the email, phone, and address columns for duplicates. If you don’t know the formula, ask the free version of ChatGPT or Claude: “Write a Google Sheets formula that highlights duplicate emails in column C.” That’s artificial intelligence (AI) doing a small, useful job.

The third one is a policy, not a tool. Only pay a reward after the referred customer’s first purchase clears your refund window.

Let Referral Software Do the Tracking

If you run more than a handful of referrals a month, a referral or affiliate platform tracks who referred whom and holds payouts until the sale is real:

  • ReferralCandy Basic is $9 a month plus a 10.5% success fee on referral sales, with a 7-day free trial. It’s built for online stores.
  • Rewardful Starter is $49 a month and connects to billing systems like Stripe, so it suits software and subscription businesses.
  • FirstPromoter Starter is $490 a year for up to $5,000 a month in affiliate revenue, also aimed at subscription businesses.

Pick the one that connects to the store or billing system you already use.

Skip the Predictive Lead Scoring Pitch

You’ll see advice to score referrers with HubSpot’s AI-built lead scores. HubSpot’s own help docs say creating contact lead scores with AI requires Marketing Hub Enterprise. That plan lists at $3,600 a month plus a one-time $7,000 onboarding fee. It’s an enterprise tool, not a referral checker for a 10-person business.

HubSpot’s free customer relationship management (CRM) software is still a fine place to keep referral contacts organized.

Automate the Follow-Up, If You Want

Thank-you and “your reward is pending” emails can be automated with Zapier. The free plan covers 100 tasks a month with two-step automations. AI-written messages inside a workflow need the Professional plan, from $19.99 a month billed yearly. Most of the referral platforms above already send these emails, so check before you build anything.

When This Isn’t Worth It

If you get fewer than 20 referrals a month, skip the software. Look at each one by hand before you pay. It takes five minutes, and you’ll know your referrers better than any tool would.

Your Next Step

Export last month’s referrals into a Google Sheet and run a duplicate check on email and phone. Then add one rule today: rewards pay out only after the first purchase clears. That alone shuts down most of the gaming.
